Overview

Moonlight Events was contracted by Sefton Council to deliver a comprehensive permanent lighting installation for Salt and Tar, a newly launched 2024 multi-use outdoor event space. This canal-side venue, constructed from repurposed shipping containers, required a technical solution that balanced industrial aesthetics with essential safety infrastructure and high-impact branding.

The Technical Challenge

The project required a “form-meets-function” approach: installing large-scale decorative lighting across an outdoor arena while integrating emergency systems and workspace illumination—all whilst maintaining the site’s rustic, industrial theme.

  • Atmospheric Festoon Lighting: The team installed over 400 metres of festoon lighting mounted on steel catenary wires across the entire site. For the upper decking, black powder-coated cages were fitted over each lamp to align with the industrial architectural style.

  • Integrated Container Lighting: To maximise headspace within the repurposed shipping containers, the team installed RGB LED strip lighting around the internal perimeters. These systems are centrally controlled via the site office, allowing for adjustable colour and brightness to suit different event profiles.

  • Safety & Operational Lighting: Beyond aesthetics, the team installed a site-wide emergency lighting system to ensure compliant illumination of exits. Additionally, 150W LED floodlights were positioned on the canal-side wall, operated via wireless switching to assist cleansing teams during post-event operations.

  • Bespoke Logo Projection: To enhance brand visibility, a high-output gobo projector with a custom-printed glass gobo was installed at the main entrance, projecting the Salt and Tar logo onto the adjacent Strand wall to capture the attention of passers-by.

  • Specialist External Wiring: For the decking areas, the team utilised bulkhead-style fixtures. This required complex cable routing beneath existing structures and through external walls to maintain a clean, wire-free finish while connecting to the main power source.

The Result

The installation provides a robust, versatile lighting infrastructure that supports Salt and Tar’s dual function as both a casual food village and a major concert arena. By delivering everything from decorative accents to critical safety systems, Moonlight Events has contributed a vital component to the ongoing regeneration of Bootle’s canal-side district.
