Salt & Tar Bootle: Lighting Installation

The Salt and Tar is a multi-use outdoor event space on Bootle’s canal side offering street food, bars, live entertainment and cultural events. Salt and Tar is a trendy versatile space that can operate as a food and drink village made up of shipping container kitchens, bench seating and a large terrace with tranquil canal views or as a major event site for a standing concert arena. This venue is a newly launched space that opened in Spring 2024.

Moonlight Events was contracted by Sefton Council to install permanent decretive and emergency lighting solutions across the space.

We installed over 400m of festoon lighting which was mounted on steel catenary wire across the whole site. In addition to this, our team further hung festoon on the top decking, following the perimeter of the area, with black powder coated cages over each lamp to fit the industrial theme of the site.

As a part of the specification, we also installed emergency lights across the whole site, ensuring there was an adequate amount of light illumining the site / exits in the event of an emergency. As well as the emergency lights, we also installed 150W LED floodlights on the far canal side wall that could be activated through a wireless switch at the end of each event night for the cleansing team to conduct their work. The site is built out of re purposed shipping containers of which within we installed RGB LED strip lighting in the roof to illuminate each space without restricting head hight with traditional lighting solutions. This lighting ran around the internal perimeter of each shipping container, lighting the seating areas. These lights can also be controlled in colour and brightness via the control panel in the site office.

To maintain the rustic feel to the venue, our team installed multiple bulkhead style lights within the decking on the far side of the venue which matched this. To achieve this, we had to run the cabling under the existing decking structure and feed the cables through the walls to route them back to the main power source.

Towards the main entrance of the site, we installed a gobo projector with a custom printed glass gobo that projected the Salt and Tar logo high up onto the wall of the Strand. This acts as a great attention grabber for people walking past the site.

Moonlight Events thoroughly enjoyed working on the Salt and Tar – helping to create a new event space as a part of the regeneration for the local area. We look forward to working on this type of install again in the future.
